Gabion

A Story of Seowon-an-gil’s Architecture

Gabion

Designing a fence that surrounded the cafe and

protected our dogs whilst letting sunlight and

cool breezes flow naturally within our environment was

a crucial but difficult element of the construction

of Seowonangil.

Inspiration

Taking inspiration from Napa Valley’s Dominus Winery

by Herzog & de Meuron, we opted to construct a gabion-style wall, utilizing space with a warm tone that harmonizes

with our  cafe’s personality.

Process

To select the stones for the gabion was another task: ultimately, we sought out a natural source from Boryeong and individually selected specimens that blended with our vision.

Stone

There, stones were historically forged from the hardening of large-scale mudflats and the remnants of ancient volcanic activity, organically synthesizing a combination between cool, fundamental gray tones and a cozy brown blush.

Preserving these wonderful regional characteristics and

the distinctive coloring of our material, we aimed to build

the entire fence system by filling custom-colored wire netting with our stones one-by-one. The tone of our stones and cages, together with the painstaking manner of our construction, is

what makes our gabion wall uniquely humble and thoughtful,

uniquely Seowonangil.
